A microscope is used to view too small objects that cannot be seen by the naked eye. Usually it is being used by the school for experiments, and at the same time at the big medical laboratories.

To introduce a child to the terrific wonders of the world, a good microscope can be used. The children will have as much fun since the objects that can be seen are usually colorful and have a lot of intricate details. Microscopes are quite expensive, so adult supervision is highly required when kids are going to use it.

The children need to understand and learn about the different parts so they will be aware on how each and every parts functions. On the other hand, the teacher must have strategies about this since some children might find it kind of boring. Teachers sometimes tend to conduct a lesson through a “show and tell” basis; definitely especially for kids they might just ignore the discussion since they are already on a state of boredom. In teaching about the parts of microscope it is better if you let your students give a try of it, so they will not just hear about it but actually see what happens.

Show the students the different parts of the microscope. First try to show them the eyepiece lens; these are the lens that one will actually look through when seeing the tiny objects, tell the children to always adjust gently the illuminator to achieve a good light.

The tube, arm, and the base are the main parts that support the microscope. Tell the students that the tube is the connection of the eyepiece to the objective lenses, so always remind the children to be careful, because they might as well hit it.

The next part is the arm; show the children the proper carrying of this through this part, with the support of the base. Then discuss to the children the important part which is the illuminator, this is used when your microscope does not have mirror, this is to give a steady light source.

Another part is the stage, tell the children that this part is where they are going to put up the objects with the help of stage slides. Always tell the children to be cautious about the slides because it is actually made up of flimsy glass.

Now, show the children the revolving nosepiece or the Turret. This is the part which actually holds the lenses, but always tell them to be careful when rotating it.

The next part is the objective lens, the objective lens and the condenser is actually the microscope. The teacher must always make sure that he has a good quality of objective. These lenses are very tiny, always tell the children to handle it with care when assembling and forming the lens systems.

The rack stop is the part of the microscope where one can adjust the objective lens through the slide, always remind the children to be careful when adjusting it to prevent it from lowering too much to the slide, because the slide might break if it touches the objective lens. Always tell the children not to allow the lens to touch the slide. Always tell them not to touch the lenses with their fingers because there are proper lens papers for cleaning the lenses.

Now show the children a vital part of the microscope which is the condenser, tell them that this part is responsible for the illumination system. It is designed to control, collect and concentrate light on the lamp and into the specimen, children will have fun with this, since they are the one who has clear vision and they can definitely focus it to where there is enough light.

The last one to show the kids is the diaphragm or iris. It has different sizes of holes which are used to change the intensity and the cone of light, the light in turn is projected to the slide upwardly.

Now that you have shown the different parts to the kids, they will be as much as excited to use it, just always guide them all through out the activity, remember, a microscope is a very expensive instrument.

Another thing for them to recall what they have learned is to give them an exercise; this exercise will be the labeling exercise. Give each child a diagram of the microscope and have it labeled by them, through this, they will recall all the parts they have learned.
